What custom foil washi tape actually is
Foil washi tape uses the same Japanese paper substrate as standard washi, with the addition of metallic foil accents bonded directly to the tape surface. Where you specify foil in your design, the factory applies real metallic foil instead of printed ink. The foil catches light from any angle and reads as actual metallic shine, not just shiny-printed color.

Foil application is precise but has a minimum spacing requirement: 0.3mm minimum stroke or space between foil elements and other artwork. Anything smaller risks bleeding or merging. We'll review your file and flag any details that need to be adjusted before production.

Why our washi tape minimum is 50
It's a factory math thing, not a quality stance. The overseas washi tape factory we work with charges a labor minimum that covers digitizing, plate setup, ink mixing, and the print run itself. That floor barely changes between 25 and 50 rolls per design, so 50 is where the per-roll price actually starts to make sense. Multiple designs per order are allowed as long as each design hits 50 rolls in the same width.

How is foil different from printed metallic ink?
Real foil is actual metallic film bonded to the tape surface. It catches light from any angle and reflects with the depth of polished metal. Printed metallic ink is colored ink that simulates metallic appearance — it reads metallic at a glance but doesn't have the same reflective shine when tilted. Foil is the premium option when you want the real metallic look.
What foil colors are available?
Common foils (gold, silver, rose gold) are stocked and ship in about four weeks. Less-common foils (other metallic colors, holographic foils, color-shift foils) are available on request but take 6 to 8 weeks because the factory sources them separately. Email us if you want a specific color so we can confirm availability and timeline.
Why is the pattern repeat tighter (250mm) than CMYK washi?
The foil application machine has different mechanical constraints than the CMYK print press. 250mm is the repeat distance the foil applicator can hold accurately. Your design will repeat about 40 times across a 10-meter roll instead of the 28 times a CMYK design repeats.
What's the 0.3mm foil spacing requirement?
Foil elements need at least 0.3mm of clearance between themselves and adjacent foil elements (and 0.3mm minimum stroke width on individual foil details). Anything tighter risks the foil bleeding or merging into a single foil mass. We'll review your file and tell you if any details need to be adjusted.
Can I combine foil with full-color printing?
Yes. The factory can run both processes on the same tape — foil accents plus CMYK color. Tell us in your file which elements should be foil and which should be CMYK, and we'll prep the file accordingly.

Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) are essential for foil washi because the foil application needs precise vector outlines to follow. Raster art doesn't work for foil placement (it works for the CMYK portions if you're combining processes). Send foil-only details as vector layers in your file.
