How to Tell the Size of Your Artwork Within the Canvas or Artboard in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate.

We run into this more often than we can count, and when you are designing your art for production, it's important to be able to know the size of your art.  Whether you're designing for print, web, or merchandise, you’ll need to know the actual size of your artwork, not just the canvas. Here’s how to check that in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate.

Photoshop: Measure Artwork Within the Canvas

While Photoshop lets you see the canvas size via Image > Image Size, here's how to check the actual size of your artwork inside it:

2 Easy Ways to check.

Using the Properties Panel

  1. Select your artwork layer.

  2. Go to Window > Properties to open the panel.

  3. The Transform information will show you the specific layer's W (width) and H (height).  You can also easily resize the art here my changing one of them.

Using the Info Panel

  1. Select your artwork layer.

  2. Go to Window > Info to open the info panel.

  3. Select the layer (Command + click the layer) and it will show W (width) and H (height) in your unit of choice (pixels, inches, etc.).

Illustrator: Check Object Size on the Artboard

Illustrator makes it easy to measure art within an artboard:

Using the Selection Tool

  1. Select your artwork using the Selection Tool (V).

  2. Look at the top control bar or the Properties panel on the right.

  3. You'll see W (width) and H (height) showing the size of the selected object.

Using the Transform Panel

  1. Go to Window > Transform.

  2. With your artwork selected, the Transform panel displays precise width and height.

  3. You can also manually enter exact dimensions if resizing is needed.

Multiple Objects?

If you select multiple elements, Illustrator will show the bounding box dimensions—the size of the overall grouped area.

How to View the Size of a Selected Layer in Inches in Procreate (time to get mathy)

Step 1: Open the Transform Tool

  1. Tap the layer you want to measure.

  2. Then tap the arrow icon (Transform tool) in the top menu.

Step 2: Look at the Size in Pixels

  • At the bottom of the screen, Procreate will show the Width (W) and Height (H) of the selected object or layer—but it’s in pixels, not inches.

Step 3: Convert Pixels to Inches Using DPI

To convert the pixel size into inches, use this formula:  DPI / Pixels
Example: If your layer is 1500 pixels wide and your canvas is set to 300 DPI, then: 1500÷300=5 inches wide1500 \div 300 = 5 \text{ inches wide}

Step 4: Find DPI Settings

  • Tap the wrench icon (Actions) > Canvas > Canvas Information > Dimensions.

  • There you’ll see your DPI (dots per inch) value.   300 for print.

Quick Conversion Tip

Use this general rule for 300 DPI (print-ready work):

  • 300 pixels = 1 inch

  • So just divide the pixel count by 300 to get inches.

Second Option...also a pain

  • Click on the wrench icon and go to Crop & Resize, scaled it to be around your art and then hit the settings. This shows this image would be 5.6" x 4.02"

We hope this helps you check the size if your artwork while designing.  So many people will design at a low DPI (dots per inch) at 72 or 96, which is not good enough for using in print and only ok for web applications.
