The short answer: Compare six things before you order custom enamel pins: what the price includes, the minimum order, who checks your art, how proofing works, what testing and guarantees back the order, and how honest the supplier is about where the pins are made. At Alchemy Merch, pricing is all-in (mold, production, and shipping), the minimum is 50 pieces, an artist reviews every order before production, and every order is backed by a 100% money-back guarantee.

Why the supplier matters more than the pin style
Hard enamel, soft enamel, and UV printed pins are all made through multi-step handwork. A pin goes through more than 10 production steps, from mold creation to inking, baking, and inspection. Mistakes at any step can show up in your finished pins, and most buyers are ordering from overseas production for the first time.
That is why the production partner you pick matters as much as the pin type. Here is what to compare.
1. What does the price include?
Many quotes list the mold, the production, and the shipping as separate lines, which makes it hard to compare totals. Ask for the all-in number.
At Alchemy Merch, every price on a product page is all-in. Molds, production, and shipping are included, and USA orders include tariffs. There are no separate setup or design fees.
Here is a real example. A 1.5" soft enamel pin with up to 5 ink colors costs:
| Quantity | All-in total | Cost per pin |
|---|---|---|
| 50 pins | $245 | $4.90 |
| 100 pins | $315 | $3.15 |
| 200 pins | $480 | $2.40 |
| 500 pins | $890 | $1.78 |
Plating costs the same across gold, silver, black nickel, and rose gold. Rainbow metal is the exception and is its own product. Size, color count, and add-ons change the total, so check the soft enamel pin page for your exact configuration. For a deeper breakdown, read how much it costs to make enamel pins.
2. What is the minimum order?
Our minimum is 50 pins per design. You can technically order fewer, but 25 or 35 pins usually cost close to the 50-piece price, because 50 is the minimum that makes a run worth the factory's time.
If you want to test a design first, a paid hard sample run is available, usually 5 pins, starting at $150. It covers the mold and the labor to produce a handful of finished pins.
3. Who checks your art before anything is made?
This is where suppliers differ most. Pins are made in metal molds, so tiny lines disappear and colors cannot touch without a metal border between them.
At Alchemy Merch, an artist reviews every order before production. The whole team are artists, musicians, and brand owners who have sent their own art to a factory. If something in your file will not translate to a pin, we tell you early and suggest a fix. You bring the art and we handle file prep, production, proofing, quality checks, and shipping. Your creative direction stays yours.
4. How does proofing work?
Every order gets a free digital proof with unlimited revisions, and nothing is made until you approve it.
There are two ways to see more before the full run is finished, and they work differently:
- Inked sample within your order. Once your order is placed, we can have the factory ink one pin first and send you a photo to approve before the rest of the order is inked. This adds about 3 to 5 days to production.
- Hard sample before you order. If you want a finished physical pin in your hands before committing to a full order, that is a separate paid hard sample run, usually 5 pins, starting at $150. The price covers the mold and the labor to produce a handful of finished pins.
Ask any supplier three questions: how many proof revisions are included, is there a charge for changes, and what does it cost to see a real sample.
5. What testing and guarantees back the order?
- 100% money-back guarantee. If an order is not right, we remake it at no cost or refund you in full. If the factory made a mistake, we remake the order and add extras.
- Prop 65 and materials testing. Our pins have passed testing for lead and phthalates, and we hold a certificate covering all materials used in production for retail sale in California. We send it on request.
6. Is the supplier honest about where pins are made?
Our enamel pins are made in China. We say so plainly, because in our experience most enamel pins are made there, including many sold by companies that are based in the US. The difference is what you can verify. We have produced over 5 million pins with our factory, built that relationship over years, and visited the factory in person to confirm workers are paid above industry standard and work regular days.
For a first-time buyer, the real risk of overseas production is sending money to a stranger and hoping it works out. Alchemy acts as your US-based production partner. Our team handles the communication, and if something goes wrong on an order, we cover it.
How long do custom enamel pins take?
About 4 weeks from proof approval to your door for most pins. Soft enamel, soft enamel with epoxy, and UV printed pins are the quickest. Hard enamel takes longer because of extra polishing steps. Anodized rainbow metal pins average about 6 weeks. There are no rush fees, but pins are handmade in several steps, so a rush is sometimes possible and sometimes not. Tell us your hard date and we will ask the factory directly. If it cannot be done, we will say so straight away.
If you need full color fast, we offer rush UV printed pins with 12 to 14 day delivery.
Which pin type should you choose?
| Pin type | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Soft enamel | Most projects, larger quantities, detailed designs | Raised metal lines with recessed enamel, the traditional pin look. Most metal plating options. Epoxy coating is free if you want a flat, glossy surface. |
| Hard enamel | Retail-priced pins, premium drops | Filled, baked, and buffed smooth to a jewelry-quality finish. Costs more because of extra labor steps. |
| UV printed | Full color art, gradients, photo-quality detail | Printed on a flat pin with no metal line limits. Cost-effective for complex multi-color art. |
| Anodized rainbow | Eye-catching one-of-a-kind color shift | Soft enamel base with rainbow plating. Each pin's color shift is unique. Averages about 6 weeks. |
| Wooden (made in USA) | Natural material, sustainable options | Cherry wood and UV printed wooden options. |
You can also add glitter (over 150 options), glow in the dark, pearl or metallic ink, translucent ink, sequential numbering, backing cards, and a backstamp. A backstamp is a one-time $40 mold that we reuse on all your future designs at no extra charge.
