Custom Enamel Pin FAQs

Enamel Pins FAQs - Production

Frequently asked questions about custom enamel pin production

Do I see a proof before they get made?

We send a digital proof for your review before production is officially scheduled.  If approved, we are rolling, but if you need adjustments, we will get new proofs until you approve.  There is not a hard sample fully completed to review before production begins.  If you need to see a single sample first, it will 2x the turnaround.  They'd need to do a full labor run for a single item, and if approved, they have to start the process over again.

How long do custom enamel pins take to make? Can you do rush orders?

Most pins take about a month from proof approval to shipment. The complexity of your design factors into its turn around time, so an easier pin will be done quicker than something very complex.

The quickest options are Soft Enamel, Soft Enamel with Epoxy or UV printed. Hard Enamel pins go through additional labor steps and take longer.

Rainbow metal pins are on average 6 weeks.

If you have a rush order, please email us and we will find out if it is doable for you.

What's the difference between soft and hard enamel or soft w/ epoxy?

Soft enamel pins have flat metal and inks are at a lower profile/recessed.  Hard enamel pins are buffed down flat.  They cost more because they have additional labor steps.  Soft enamel with epoxy has a clear coating of epoxy added (free to do) and creates a flat surface, like a mock hard enamel.  This can be great if you have thinner details in your pin, want to use a soft enamel metal, etc.  We are big fans of soft epoxy here.

How do I know if my shape is complex or die cut?

Simple shapes or ones with softer edges can be made by being stamped in sheets of iron. More complex shapes with deeper cut-in areas, cut outs, and tight cut-in sections need to be cast in zinc alloy and use a different mold and base metal. They cost more because of the material and mold differences. If you are unsure, email us. If you check out with one and need the other, we will either refund the difference or send a request for the remaining amount.

Where are your products made/what’s the factory like?

Our enamel pins are made in China, as almost all enamel pins are (there are some factories who claim to produce them in the US, but it's false advertising. They have a US-based team just like us, but hide the fact that they make the actual products in China). Many people think that Chinese factories are "sweatshops" or that they employ child labor or other unethical practices, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Chinese manufacturing is a sophisticated, high-tech industry that involves competitive local wages and teams of skilled engineers and artisans. It is akin to (or in many cases more advanced than) manufacturing processes and facilities in the US. Our owner has personally visited our pin factory, met the owner, and even tried his hand at fabrication. Most of our other products also come from Chinese partners, except for stickers and wooden products which are made in the USA.

What happens if my order isn't made right?

We are making handmade products and things can go wrong.  A color mixed up, the plating having small issues, etc.  Any order made wrong or with issues can be either re-made or refunded with the bad product returned.  We never want this to happen, but when it does, we have your back and it won't cost you anything.

Is there a discount on re-orders?

Yes! On enamel products, you will save $50 on subsequent orders of the same design because the mold is already made. (On products that don’t use a mold (like washi or acrylic charms), the production price stays the same.)

Are there discounts if I order a lot of designs at the same time?

We can always get an exact quote for you and when you have a lot of enamel pins being made at the same time, they will benefit from shared shipping that will bring down your total cost.

We are happy to get quotes for any order directly from the factory. The pricing on this site has to assume it ships on its own, but like any shipping, when you have more shipped together, it averages down per piece.

Are your pins Prop 65 compliant?

Yes! Our pins are Prop 65 compliant for sale in California. If your company needs its own testing, we can arrange it for you as well.

Art & Customization FAQs Enamel Pins

Frequently Asked Questions about Customization options for custom enamel pins

Can I do variants?

Yes.  Simple variants are no problem or ones with at least 50 per color way.  If you have a lot of variants or tons of colors changing, specialty inks, changes in numbering, etc, please email us for an exact quote.  At the end of the day, pins are priced based on materials and labor.  If we do a run of 100 pins with 4 colors, 25 x 4 and each has different colors, we are creating a lot more labor than 100 of one color way.

Can you do other things not listed, other quantities or more colors?

Yes! We can make any size, quantity or number of colors needed. We can also make spinners, latched pins, multi-piece pin on pin and more.  Please email us for an exact quote.

How are the custom pins packaged?

Pins arrive packaged in small individual zipper bags. This is primarily for protection during shipping. They have a long way to go and could scratch each other if not separated. The individual pins are then placed into larger groupings of 50-100 depending on their size. You can also opt to have your pins packaged on custom card backers, which are then slipped into cello bags (either regular, or "retail ready" with a hang tab on top). This can be a great time-saver and is surprisingly affordable.

Will my art be taken/resold/ripped off?

We have a close relationship with our factories and they have a lot more to lose than gain by using anybody's designs for their own purposes. At our request, they don't even show our designs in their portfolio. Sadly, most times when a design is stolen, it's actually done by stealing an image online and tracing it, so we can't promise your design will never get copied, but we can promise our factory won't be the one doing it.

Can I customize my pin backings? What are the options at Alchemy?

We have many colors and backing types for all pin options! With our default option being the classic Black Rubber we have many other colors in stock. Alchemy has Teal, Pink, Blue, Fuchsia, White, Yellow, Clear, Green, Lime Green, Red, Orange, and Dark Gray. Looking for something more fun? We also have pink and black colored rubber backers that come in the shapes of hearts! (All rubber backings are included in cost.) We also offer silver and gold butterfly backers (no additional cost).

Still looking for something elegant with security? We offer our Deluxe Backers that come in silver and gold (+0.25 per - two post pin = +0.50 per). Still not what you are looking for? Send us an email and we can help with your customization needs!

We can also make fully custom shapes for you, but they require a min of 10k backers.

My art might be too detailed. Will it work as a pin?

Yes! Ever heard of UV Printed pins? Capture intricate details and vibrant colors with direct-to-metal UV printing. UV has a thin clear coating which makes a hard enamel appearance and can achieve the smooth, polished look of hard enamel pins without the color separation limitations. This option is ideal for complex designs with gradients and fine details.

Learn about the different ways to make custom enamel pins

Choose from hard enamel, soft enamel, soft enamel with epoxy, anodized rainbow, UV printed, acrylic, USA-made wooden, needle minders, coins, necklaces, and stitch markers. Every style we make, with the production tradeoffs explained.

Hard Enamel Pins

The metal is filled with enamel, baked, then buffed flat for a jewelry-quality finish. Higher cost than soft enamel, but the smooth surface and richer color saturation make hard enamel the standard for retail-priced pins and licensed work. Screen printing layers easily on top of the polished surface.

Soft Enamel Pins

The traditional pin style, with raised metal lines and enamel ink filled at a slightly recessed level for tactile texture. Most metal plating options of any pin style. Add an epoxy dome to mimic a hard enamel finish or to amplify specialty inks like glitter and glow in the dark.

Rainbow Metal Soft Enamel Pins

Anodized rainbow plating is created by passing an electrical charge through the metal while it's submerged in water. The color shift that results varies pin-to-pin, making each one truly one of a kind. Available in soft enamel only, or soft enamel with epoxy for a premium feel. Best for limited edition drops where uniqueness is the point.

UV Printed Metal Pins

Full-color UV printing on a metal pin base, sealed with a thin clear coating. The cleanest way to reproduce gradients, photo-quality images, and intricate multi-color designs that the metal-line constraints of hard or soft enamel can't accommodate.

Wooden Pins

Made in the USA using sustainable cherry wood. Choose UV-printed full color for vibrant designs, or burned for a classic woodgrain look. Eco-friendly inks. Lightweight and natural. A fit for outdoor brands, Pacific Northwest creators, and anyone wanting a non-metal alternative.

Needle Minders

Hard or soft enamel pins built on a flat zinc alloy base with a paired magnet system. One magnet is glued to the back. A second loose magnet works through the fabric to hold needles in place during cross stitch and embroidery. Zinc alloy is non-magnetic itself, which is what makes the paired-magnet design work cleanly. A favorite in the cross stitch and crafting community.

Coins

Double-sided challenge coins in 2D (flat relief) or 3D (sculpted relief). Both faces require their own mold. Antique metal finishes pair especially well with the relief detail. Enamel inks can be added. They work best on 2D coin designs where the inks aren't competing with sculpted depth.

Stitch Markers & Shoe Charms

Small enamel charms with a jump ring or split ring attachment. Hard enamel, soft enamel, or UV printed. A fit for fiber crafts (knitting, crochet) and as Croc charms or zipper pulls. Sold customized to your design and quantity.

Necklaces

Hard or soft enamel pendants on gold or silver chains. Same metal-and-ink construction as enamel pins, finished with a jump ring and chain instead of a pin backing. Available in standard chain lengths and metal plating options.

Acrylic Pins

Full-color, lightweight pins ideal for designs with gradients, photo elements, or fine detail that doesn't suit metal pin production. Two layers of acrylic with a safety pin backing. Glitter, epoxy, or holographic effects can be added.
