Custom patch keychains for artists, indie brands, bands, podcasters, and anyone making keychains with a tactile, fabric-and-thread feel rather than metal or plastic. We make them in rectangle, square, circle, and motel shapes (the same motel shape as our metal motel keychains), with a keyring attached so they're ready to use out of the box. Custom shapes are possible for larger runs.

Alchemy is a production partner built by artists, musicians, and brand owners. We've helped creators produce over 5 million custom products since 2019, and we don't operate like a promotional products company. Whether you're an indie illustrator running your first 50-patch drop, a band making merch for a tour, or a designer ordering patches for a brand launch, our job is the same: make the best merch we can for you.

What a patch keychain actually is

A patch keychain is a custom patch (50% embroidered or fully woven) finished with a keyring attachment instead of an iron-on backing. The patch hangs flat on a key fob or lanyard and adds tactile, branded character that metal keychains can't match. Common uses: band merch, brand giveaways, convention swag, retail accessories, podcast launches.

Construction options

50% embroidered patch keychain

Twill backing carries the background color, with the rest of the design raised in embroidered thread. Two levels of texture: flat twill behind, raised stitch in front. The classic scout-patch look applied to a keychain. We also offer this as a standalone patch (without the keychain attachment), which is detailed on our 50% embroidered patches page.

Fully woven patch keychain

Entire patch is woven thread, edge to edge. Holds finer detail than 50% embroidered, lays slightly flatter, and reads as printed-on-fabric rather than stitched. Best for designs with intricate art or smaller text.

Both options support double-sided artwork (different art on each face) and edge finishing in either merrowed (simple shapes) or embroidered (complex shapes) edge.

Sizes

  • Rectangle: 125mm (4.92") x 30mm (1.18")
  • Square: Up to 3"
  • Circle: Up to 3"
  • Motel shape: 3.5" tall x 1.76" wide (same as our standard motel keychain)
  • Custom shape: Send us the artwork and dimensions and we'll quote it.

How a patch run actually works

Most orders start with a quote, not a cart. You send us your artwork (vector, raster, sketch, whatever you have), and we come back with pricing, a production timeline, and any production notes within a business day or two. We'll flag anything in the file that won't translate well at production size before we move forward, so you're not surprised at the sample.

Once the order is confirmed and submitted to the factory, you'll see a hard sample within about a week (closer to 10 days for woven patches because of the weaving setup). The sample is a real, finished patch made from your design. You review it, approve it or ask for changes, and once approved the factory runs the full quantity.

Total door-to-door is about four weeks, including express shipping. That's the nature of producing 100% custom merchandise overseas vs. shipping a stock promotional item. If you have a hard deadline, tell us before you order. We don't charge rush fees. We'll either confirm we can hit your date or tell you up front that we can't, so you can plan around it.

Why our minimum is 50

It's a factory math thing, not a quality stance. The factories we work with charge a labor minimum that covers digitizing, setup, the hard sample, and the production run itself. That floor barely changes between a 25-patch and a 50-patch order, so a 25-patch run costs almost the same as 50 with half the patches. 50 is where the per-patch price actually starts to make sense.

We can run smaller hard sample runs if you really need to (the factory will do it), but it's not financially viable for most people: you're paying close to 50-patch pricing for a fraction of the output. If you're set on a small run, email us first and we'll walk through whether it's worth it. Larger runs (100, 200, and up) bring the per-patch cost down meaningfully.

Who we work with

Artists running their own work: illustrators, bands, indie brand owners, podcasters, comic creators, convention sellers. Designers ordering patches for a brand launch, an event, a campaign, or a customer giveaway. Agencies and design studios producing patches for their clients. Merch companies running production for the artists they represent. The common thread is that the merch matters: it's representing a brand, a band, an artist, or a project that someone cares about.

  • Quality good enough for licensed brands. We've produced patches for officially licensed properties and large brands. The same standard goes on every order, including yours.

Common questions

What's the difference between 50% embroidered and woven?

50% embroidered uses twill for the background and embroidered thread for the design, giving you two levels of height (the classic scout-patch look). Woven uses a tighter weave that holds finer detail, and they're thinner and lighter overall.

What's a merrowed edge?

A merrowed edge is the raised thick border you see on classic patches. It works on simple shapes (rectangle, circle, square, triangle). For complex or custom shapes, we use an embroidered edge instead, which handles curves and angles a merrowed edge can't.

Are patch keychains double-sided?

Yes. Both 50% embroidered and woven support different artwork on each side.

Can I do variants on a single run?

Yes. Variants on a patch keychain (different colors or small art changes within one run) cost a little more because of the added labor and machine time, usually 20 cents or more per piece depending on complexity. Email us for an exact quote on your specific split.

How long do patch keychains take?

About four weeks total: roughly 1 week for the hard sample if 50% embroidered (closer to 10 days for woven), then full production after sample approval, plus express shipping. No rush fees.

Can you make other sizes or shapes?

Yes. Send us the artwork and the size you're looking for, and we'll quote it. Custom shapes are most economical at larger run quantities.

What artwork format works best?

Vector (AI, EPS, PDF) is ideal. High-resolution raster (300 DPI at print size) also works. We'll prep your file for the factory's process before submitting.

Are your patch keychains made in the USA?

Our patch keychains are produced overseas at long-vetted factories. Our team is US-based and handles file prep, proofing, and customer success on every order. Our wooden products and stickers are the products we make in the USA.

Design Templates

Set up your artwork at the correct size with proper bleed and safe zones using our production templates. Vector files (PDF/AI/EPS) are preferred for clean lines and scaling; raster (PSD) works for full-color artwork at 300dpi.
